In our recessed economy, most people don't have a lot of extra money lying around. This means that when they go to shop for anything, whether it's horse waterers or DVDs, they want to make sure they're paying the lowest possible price. And how do they find the lowest possible price? By setting up price comparisons. If you're interested in stretching your budget further, use this guide to help you set up price comparisons that will show you where the best deals can be found, both online and in the stores.
Price comparisons are easy to do with the aid of the internet. There are some shopping sites, like Shopzilla, for example, that will return hundreds of hits on the item you search for and list them in order of price. When you're shopping online though, remember to take shipping costs into consideration. One website might offer what seems like a huge discount on organic diapers, but balance it out with high shipping and handling costs that make the ultimate price equal to or even greater than their competitors. Often the only way to find out shipping costs is to go almost all the way through the checkout procedure.

Another factor to consider when you're online shopping is that not all online retailers are legitimate or trustworthy. If your search for an on demand hot water heater turns up a website advertising them for a significantly cheaper price than most of its competitors, you need to be suspicious. Check out the website's security certificate. Is the little lock on your browser closed or open? What do the major security sites, like Norton and McAffe, rate the site? If it doesn't check out, they may be a scam site looking to steal your credit card number.
You can even use the internet to help you comparison shop in person. Comparison shopping in the pre-internet era meant digging through flyers or spending your hard earned gold mutual funds dividends on gas to drive from store to store. Today most chain stores have their catalog and price list online, so you can check from home and find the cheapest store. Remember though, getting to the store costs money. If there's a store in the next town over offering it for a dollar cheaper, it's not worth the gas money to drive out and get it.
When you're comparison shopping in person, remember your flyers. Sometimes a coupon for one store will make the item you want cheaper than the sale price in another store. Some stores also offer to beat their competitor's advertised price. If this is the case, you can get that swing set for the backyard of your Rockwood real estate at an even bigger discount by bringing in the competitor's flyer and asking for their discount.
